About Director Nisa Ra:
Nisa Ra, a longtime Philadelphia resident is a native of San Francisco Bay Area and a graduate of University of California, Berkeley with a degree in African American Studies and a minor in Film. She is the director of the acclaimed documentary Black Love Lives, a short film exploring healthy African American relationships. This video highlights how authentic couples (from ages 20s to 90s) ‘connected’ as well as their strategies for making love work. The often unheard voices of the males provides further insight.
She is a trailblazing entrepreneur who operated one of Old City Philadelphia’s original boutique/galleries, The Bird of Paradise International Boutique and Gallery which showcased the work of many local and international artists, artisans, and designers including Ntozake Shange, Cal Massey, Jonathan Pinkett, Tom McKinney, Ellen Tiberino, Ursula Rucker, and Lamont Steptoe.
In line with her dedication to art as activism, Ra, founded the Malcolm X Film Festival, which presents cultural and educational films in the spirit and legacy of the revolutionary icon. Ra is a writer, wholistic healer, community activist, and motivational speaker who has worked and traveled extensively around the world including Asia, Africa, Europe, and The Caribbean.
